How to Use This Simulation

Top View (Gleason Map)

  • Shows the sun and moon positions over a flat Earth projection
  • The red dot is your observer position (adjustable with lat/long controls)
  • The yellow dot is the sun's current position
  • The gray dot is the moon's current position
  • Hover over the map to see coordinates and use the magnifier
  • Click anywhere on the map to set your observer position

Observer's View

  • Shows what the observer sees at their position
  • The horizon line shows North → East → South → West
  • The yellow circle represents the sun's position relative to the observer
  • The gray circle represents the moon's position relative to the observer
  • Red dots show the analemma pattern (sun's position at solar noon throughout the year)

Controls

  • Play/Pause: Animate the sun's movement through the day
  • Time Slider: Manually set the time of day (24-hour format)
  • Animation Speed: Adjust how fast the sun moves (1x to 100x speed)
  • Looking South/North: Change the observer's viewing direction
  • Full View/Half View: Toggle between ±180° and ±90° view
  • Sun Trace: Show the sun's path throughout the day
  • Generate Analemma: Show sun's position at solar noon for entire year

Measurements & Analysis

  • All angles and positions are calculated based on the flat Earth model
  • The data panel shows sun position, angles, and distances
  • Units can be toggled between kilometers and miles
  • The analemma shows simple up and down movement predicted by flat Earth theory
  • Compare this vertical pattern with the figure-8 analemma observed on globe Earth
